I've been in touch with the Santa Clara County Vector Control folks, and they said to contact the members of the Santa Clara Bee Keepers Guild (www.beeguild.org). So I've left a couple of messages on members' phones, in the hope that one of them would be interested in coming over and rescuing my swarm. Hubby says I should call Terminix and get them "removed" (aka destroyed), but that's only because he has a deep seated loathing of bees that originated from being stung many times as a child (when, to be fair, he had apparently covered himself in jam, so he was asking for it). Given the fragile state of the world's bee population right now, I'm not going to do that.

Hmm, whose bright idea was it that we stay in the house while it's being remodeled?
About our remodel
We tore out the half-bathroom (toilet) from the corner of the kitchen on one side of the house, and the family room bathroom on the other side. We also cleared away the old barbeque, hot tub, gazebo and koi carp pond by the kitchen. Two large trees, a Monterey Pine and a cedar, have been removed. (Apparently the pine was hazardous and only had a couple of years left in it.) The wine fridge area and extra front door have been taken out of the family room, and the user orientation of the family room swung round 90 degrees.
The new building comprises a laundry room and office off the kitchen; and a fourth bedroom and guest bathroom off the family room. We have created a window seat in the family room, a new doorway to the garage from the back yard, swapped out the 17 year old kitchen cabinets (be gone, greyness!) and generally updated and upgraded the house with dual-pane windows, doors that fit, and wiring that isn't so scary.
The remodel formally kicked off on October 12, 2009, and was scheduled to be "substantially complete" by March 12, 2010. This is how the timetable actually went:
Update: January 7 - Final punch list walk through is now scheduled for April 12.
Update April 25 - Punch list walk through took place on April 19. The interior is basically finished except for a few of minor things and getting the Velux windows in the kitchen to work. Looks like we have up to another month on the exterior for stucco and painting. The landscaping is another story....
Update June 4 - The house will not be finished before the end of June as we are waiting for items to arrive from being on back order (screen doors, exterior lights, Velux window parts). There is now some danger that the landscaping will overtake the house project and be finished first.
Update June 10 - House passed its "final inspection".
Update July 1 - The outdoor kitchen is officially good to use.
Update July 9 - Outdoor kitchen passed its final inspection.
